🚢 North Sea Oil Tanker Collision Sparks Environmental and Legal Crisis
A major maritime emergency has unfolded in the North Sea following a collision between the US-flagged oil tanker Stena Immaculate and the Portuguese container ship Solong near the Humber Estuary on March 10. The crash resulted in fires, explosions, and an ongoing environmental response.
The Solong, traveling at 16 knots, struck the anchored Stena Immaculate at around 9:50 AM. Emergency crews, including the RNLI and Coastguard, rescued 36 crew members, but one remains missing. The Stena Immaculate was carrying jet fuel, which has leaked into the sea, while the Solong contained hazardous materials, including sodium cyanide.
Authorities have enforced a five-mile exclusion zone around the site. Humberside Police have arrested the Solong’s captain on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter as investigations continue.
